성경에서 이스라엘 민족이 애굽에서 탈출해 하나님이 약속한 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 가나안 땅에 가기까지 많은 우여곡절을 겪은 결과, 40년 만에 가나안 땅에 들어가게 된다. 정상적으로 이동했다면 11일에서 2주 만에 갈 수 있는 거리를 40년이라는 오랜 시간이 걸려 도착했다.

애굽을 탈출할 때 인구는 추측컨대 200만에서 250만 명이었다고 한다. 40년이 지난 후 이 200만에서 250만의 1세대 사람들 중에 가나안 땅에 들어간 사람은 여호수아와 갈렙이라는 두 사람뿐이었다. 그 40년이라는 시간 동안의 우여곡절을 다루고자 쓴 글은 아니니 차치하고, 정상적으로 간다면 2주 만에 갈 수 있는 거리를 40년의 시간 동안 광야의 삶을 살며 그 많은 사람들 중 단 두 사람만이 살아남았다.

우리가 인생이 고달프거나 힘든 시기를 보낼 때 ‘광야를 건너는 시기’라고 종종 이야기하는데, 그 이유를 알 수 있는 배경의 이야기이다.

한 가지 주목해야 할 것은 가나안에 들어갈 때의 인구 수도 200만에서 250만 명으로 추정된다는 점이다. 애굽을 탈출할 때의 이스라엘 민족 중에 두 사람만 남겨놓고 200만에서 250만의 사람이 모두 광야에서 죽었으나, 가나안에 들어갈 때의 인구는 그대로 유지되었다.

놀랍지 않은가? 많은 종교인들이 이스라엘 민족의 광야에서의 40년간을 이야기할 때 그들의 순종하지 못함과 수많은 사건 사고를 이야기하고, 순종한 여호수아와 갈렙의 이야기를 중심으로 말한다. 그러나 사실 그런 우여곡절만큼 중요한 것은 가나안에 들어갈 때의 인구수가 40년 전과 거의 다르지 않다는 것이다.

신의 축복은 한결같고 그 뜻은 반드시 이루어진다는 것을 깨달을 수 있다. 신에게 중요한 것은 그의 뜻이고, 그 뜻은 반드시 이루어진다.

인간이 선택할 수 있는 것은 기쁨으로 순종하는 것이냐 반항을 하는 것이냐의 자유의지뿐이다.

The Wilderness

In the Bible, the Israelites escaped from Egypt and eventually entered Canaan, the promised land flowing with milk and honey, after experiencing many trials and tribulations over a period of 40 years. Had they traveled normally, the journey would have taken only 11 days to two weeks, yet it took them 40 long years to arrive.

The population at the time of the exodus from Egypt is estimated to have been between 2 million and 2.5 million people. After 40 years, of this first generation who left Egypt, only two people—Joshua and Caleb—entered the promised land of Canaan. This isn’t meant to be a detailed account of all the challenges faced during those 40 years, but it’s worth noting that a journey that should have taken just two weeks stretched into 40 years in the wilderness, with only two survivors from the original generation.

This story provides context for why we often describe difficult or challenging periods in our lives as “crossing the wilderness.”

One remarkable fact worth noting is that when the Israelites finally entered Canaan, their population was still estimated to be between 2 million and 2.5 million. Although everyone from the original generation who left Egypt had died in the wilderness except for those two men, the overall population remained virtually unchanged when they entered Canaan.

Isn’t that astonishing? When many religious people discuss the Israelites’ 40 years in the wilderness, they tend to focus on their disobedience and the numerous incidents that occurred, centering their narrative around the faithfulness of Joshua and Caleb. However, equally significant is the fact that the population upon entering Canaan was almost identical to what it had been 40 years earlier.

From this, we can understand that God’s blessing remains constant and His will is always fulfilled. What matters to God is His purpose, and that purpose will inevitably come to pass. The only choice humans have is whether to obey joyfully or to rebel—this is the extent of our free will.
